Abstract

Objective : The aim was to assess the value of morphologic scoring system(MI), pulsatility index(PI) and CA 125 to differentiate benign and malignant ovarian-tumors by conventional and color Doppler sonography.
Method : Medical records of 50 patients referred with preexisting adnexal lesion were reviewed retrospectively by comparing preoperative ultrasonic data(morphologic index and color and pulsed Doppler findings) with serum CA-125 levels.
Result : Fifty masses were removed surgically, and confirmed as 35 benign and 15 malignant tumors. The morphologic scoring system showed a higher sensitivity(93.3%) than Pulsatiiity index(PI) or CA-125. The morphologic scoring system and CA-125 revealed the highest sensitivity(93.3%) and speeifieity(97.1 %) in distinguishing malignant from benign ovarian tumors.
Conclusion : The morphologic scoring system & CA-125 is the best method for predicting ovarian malignancy. The morphologic scoring system & CA-125 used in combination with Pulsatility index(PI) may improve the accuracy of predicting ovarian malignancy.
